Refugee Story Night: SOUFRA Film
Join us for an evening of film and Persian cuisine at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Newtown, CT! ”Soufra” follows the inspirational story Mariam Shaar, an unlikely entrepreneur, whose family has lived for generations in the Burj El Barajneh refugee camp just south of Beirut, Lebanon. The film follows Mariam as she sets out against all odds to change her fate by launching a successful catering company, SOUFRA and then expanding it into a food truck business with a diverse team of fellow refugee women living in the same camp.
Proceeds to benefit Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (IRIS), a CT based refugee resettlement organization that helps families rebuild their lives in the US after years of persecution and displacement.
Your ticket will include the film and light meal by Greenleaf Persian Catering - owned and operated by an Iranian refugee family resettled by IRIS - and a panel discussion with Chris George (IRIS Executive Director) & Sam Rose (Owner Greenleaf Catering).
SOUFRA Cookbooks -- unique recipes by refugees featured in the film -- will be available for $40! Proceeds from cookbook sales benefit both SOUFRA refugee chefs in Lebanon and IRIS refugees in New Haven.
